Latvian lawmakers have approved a major legislative reform regarding digital asset taxation, scheduled for implementation in 2027. Under the overhauled tax framework, taxation will apply exclusively to crypto withdrawals that exceed deposited amounts, effectively exempting intermediate trades from individual capital gains tracking. This approach aims to reduce administrative friction for retail investors while establishing clear compliance standards for the digital asset sector. The law also introduces a one-time declaration mechanism to regularize historical holdings and simplify reporting procedures. By modernizing its tax code, Latvia positions itself as a forward-looking jurisdiction for cryptocurrency adoption within the European regulatory landscape.
